Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, from Long Beach CA. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise at the age of a small girl. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art, as well as theatre. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as a vehicle for activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate through artwork. DuVernay resided in Compton throughout her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. When she was studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. She also started several lifestyles and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
